Does Your Definition of Ministry Differ From That of Jesus?

No matter what you're doing, your ministry has to be about Jesus, not about you. (Photo by Malcolm Lightbody on Unsplash)

Ministry is not about us. It is not about the great organization we can build or the size of our church.

It is not about popularity or fame. It is not about our legacy or our greatness. Ministry is about sharing with others what is working in us.

Ministry in the eyes of many is to stand behind a pulpit and preach to a congregation on a Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night. They see it as visiting those who are in the hospital, marrying those who want to be married and burying those who die. I do not see ministry that way, but that is the way I think.

Ministry is not about building monuments to our own greatness. It is about allowing Christ who lives in us to live His life through our lives and to touch the lives of other people.

Ministry is not about us attaining the accolades of men. It is not about becoming a great man or woman of God! It is not about the size and scope of the organization we may build. It is about service. It is about helping others. It is about love for others.

—Ministry is not about prestige, fame or fortune.

—It is not about building our own kingdom and being the center of attention.

Ministry (in the words of my friend Terry L. Mize) is about living to give. It is about sharing. It is showing kindness. It is about lifting those who are downtrodden. Ministry is about one thing: It is love in action. It is allowing love Himself to flow through us.

I like to say that ministry is who we are and what we have to offer. It is what is working on the inside of us. It has to do with what is working in us and what we can give to other people 24 hours a day in everyday life.

Ministry is me. It is who I am and what is in me in abundance that overflows and pours out of me without effort. The only real ministry I have is that which is birthed in me by the Holy Spirit that is real, living and working in me. It is what I am able to convey to others and help them to receive from God.

And more importantly, ministry is Jesus living His life through our lives and ministering through us to the needs of others.

The ministry of Jesus through us is an unselfish lifestyle of helping others to connect with God so that they can have their needs met in Him and reach their fullest potential as God's workmanship, created in Christ!
