Last week a group of "progressive" legislators announced their plan for a "Green New Deal." Amazingly, several Democratic candidates for president have indicated their support.
The stated purpose of the Green New Deal is to save us from global warming by eliminating all fossil fuels and other carbon emissions such as cow flatulence (yes, really) in 10 years. Imagine America without airplanes, cars, trucks to deliver food and all that internet commerce, fuel to heat our homes and so on. And of course, no more beef. At the same time, the rest of the world would be gleefully exploiting the collapse of the American economy, pumping up those feared carbon emissions. Naturally the elites would continue to have their planes and cars as in all socialist countries, but the average American's living standard would fall below levels seen in Cuba and Venezuela.
But there is more to the Green New Deal. After wrecking the economy, they are promising free health care, free college and a guaranteed income for those who do not wish to work. The health care program alone may cost over $4 trillion per year, or more than the current federal budget and about 25 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). Of course, government revenues would collapse along with the economy.
"No problem," they say. "Government can just print the money." Soon, we can join the socialism-loving people of Venezuela with a million percent inflation.
Yet even while the big-government progressives push fear of global warming, voices of reason can still be heard. Two years ago, scientists warned that solar energy output, the real basis of global warming, was declining. As a result, the projections of the climate extremists have failed to materialize, and we may in fact be moving into a cycle of global cooling. But, even using the most extreme climate projections, a recent government study found that U.S. GNP growth would still triple by the end of the century. Some studies have found beneficial results from increasing carbon dioxide levels, since it is a necessary plant food, and we have seen new green areas twice the size of the United States added to the surface of the Earth since 1980. This is the real green new deal.
The truth is that the climate is in the hands of God, and no one knows what tomorrow will bring. What we do know is that a group of politicians are willing to destroy the American economy in order to control your life through fear. Don't let fear steal your prosperity.
Remember "God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control" (2 Tim. 1:7).
