Sometimes, in my Bible devotions, I feel the Word was written just for me. It's a very personal and meaningful message. The Holy Spirit seems to be speaking just to me.
In developing a message strategy, I've always taught others to write the first draft to their mothers or some other important person in their lives.
Perhaps I need to write a message to my community to encourage them to attend our services this weekend. Surely we can do better than to only promote a new sermon series.
How about this for a headline:
"63 Young People Baptized This Month!"
Or this...
"I Felt Loved From the Moment I Stepped Into the Church Lobby."
Or this...
"It's Noisy Out There. Find Peace This Sunday."
The key component of any message is to call out a group of people in need.
"63 young people" calls out parents of troubled youth.
"Church lobby" calls out people who need people.
"Noisy" calls out people who feel their life is filled with noise of any kind.
Messages should be written with one person in mind. It's not a specific person, but a specific need that one person represents.
It's true, many people may not connect with the call-out. That's perfect. Only people who need you will respond.
Jesus loves me. This I know, because He wrote to me.
