Colin Powell once said, "There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure."
On this day recognized for lucky charms, leaders know that luck is something for others to depend upon. Of Powell's formula for success, I suggest preparation is "the greatest of these."
Senior leaders would likely agree that junior-level teams seem to discount the value of diligent preparation.
- Skip steps
- Google it
- Ain't nobody got time for that
In my observation, there is a general decline in the discipline to prepare. The best-prepared win, and it doesn't seem too difficult to be the best. Out-prepare, outwork and out-fail. Let others phone it in in while we continue to burn midnight oil and break all the rules of required sleep.
The teaching pulpit of a senior leader, to those who pursue leadership, should consist of a curriculum of preparedness. Teach developing leaders to:
- Read what others won't
- Write for critical evaluation on a daily basis
- Reduce tech and social dribble
- Count costs but try projects that might fail
- Depend upon favor and blessings rather than luck
Developing leaders need to learn how seniors depend upon the Lord for preparation. We are called by the Holy Spirit to use our gifts and must expect favor. Teach young leaders by your daily walk, how much you depend upon the leading of the Holy Spirit.
I am not a lucky guy. I don't want to be.
Good favor today!
