Pastors Weigh in on Eddie Long Scandal

Recent public statements by megachurch pastors in response to a scandal-ridden peer reveal differing perspectives on repentance, restoration and ministerial ethics.

Last September, four men—all former members of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta—claimed the church's pastor, Eddie Long, used gifts, trips and money to coerce them into engaging in sex acts with him. Although no criminal charges were filed, Long settled with his accusers last month, leading some church leaders who had previously reserved judgment to speak out.

On June 5, fellow Atlanta pastor Creflo Dollar urged his World Changers Church to refrain from gossiping about the Long scandal and warned disgruntled New Birth members that they would not find a listening ear at his church.

"That preacher's still anointed to do what he was called to. He just had a wreck. The blood will take care of his issue just like it will take care of yours," Dollar stated. "And I just can't believe that people would leave their preacher because he had a wreck, instead of praying for him."

When the allegations first hit the news last September, Dallas pastor, Bishop T.D. Jakes encouraged his congregation, The Potter's House, to pray, saying, "When all this is over, one thing is for sure—somebody, if not everybody in it, is going to need the blood."

More recently, Jakes was interviewed by The Christian Post at the McDonald's Gospelfest on June 18 in Newark, N.J. When asked about the scandal, Jakes noted that New Birth should be allowed to address the situation within its own church structure.

"The New Birth church is a church unto itself who has a board and it has a membership. How they choose to handle their leadership issues it's not something that we can control regardless of which side you stay on that issue," Jakes said. "It is their church issue and their responsibility and their response."

The most direct statements have come from Bishop Paul Morton, who leads Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church in New Orleans and Changing a Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church in Atlanta. In a message posted online June 21, Morton called on Long to apologize to the men who sued him.

“If the settlement has already been made they can't sue you again, but you can apologize,” he said. “Some people will stay with you, some people gonna leave you, but you've got to leave that up to God. Those are the consequences for the sins that we do.”

Morton is the presiding bishop of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship, the body that consecrated Long as "third presiding bishop" of the group in 1994 (a position now held by Los Angeles pastor Clarence McClendon). However, Morton appeared to be addressing Long as a fellow minister, not in a disciplinary function, and New Birth is not listed in the Fellowship's directory of affiliated churches.

#13 What makes you state Uriah was the villian, & King David was Bathsheba's hero? Even though she mourned his loss?

His comments on this issue have just removed any doubt that I had about Creflo Dollar. He's a part of the problem.

#11 For clarity,& so many more do not continue to not come to repentence BECAUSE OF DAVID'S SUPPOSED SIN WAS GREATER THAN THEIRS? We must again state emphadically King David was not called to repent for murder, nor for having the scoundral Uriah killed. It was simply the way in which he carried it out (in violation of the law of Israel). Uriah would have been stoned by the elders (had King David followed the law as to the 'apostate' Uriah). Also he had failed to replace the unpaid dowry promised Bathsheba's father by Uriah when he, instead of Uriah 'consumated' the marriage himself(as under first rights of Kings). Now this applies to this current scandal ONLY ON BASIS OF THIS 'BAPTIST' CHURCH FOLLOW THEIR OWN 'BAPTIST' LAWS IN DEALING WITH THEIR LEADER (and not try him some other way which would cause other to die in the battles which always ensue WHEN A BOARD OF ELDERS ARE NOT CALLED IN TO BRING THEIR PEER TO AN 'ACQUITTAL' OR 'STONING').

jakes and dollar are both shills. They have thier own piccadillos and they fear that if they ever come out what they have said about other fallen preachers will not condemn them. Otherwise they would state bold uncompromising rebuke of Long and call him to resign. He's not king David. He's not in messianic succession. The people who choose to follow his ministry in spite of all this are weak willed and placing sentimentality over Gods Word. God can heal him and restore him, but he has to come clean and take a bed in the spiritual infirmary. you don't just stop doing homosexual stuff. it takes a lot of work and therapy to get rid of those kinds of impulses. This is not the last of the shameful revelations. Mark my words.

Step Down and Sit down is the Answer.Long's anointing is tainted and so is everything that He touches. David repented for killing Uriah, but there were consequences for that sin. My heart goes out to the guys who trusted their leader. We don't know what they are experiencing trying to get their manhood back. God bless them!

Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him. And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them ,Nay , my brethern, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly, Judges 19:22-23
I beleive that christian leaders are all subject to spiritual attack to discredit them. the devil knows the weakness we have and he will stop at nothing to exploit them . This is not to say that Bishop Long did nothing wrong but we as the church need to start addressing and preaching on sexual purity, the church is under such demonic attack, people are going to hell behind sex outside of marriage( fornication and adultry, pornography, homosexually, lesbianism, and child molestation.

believe it,or not'Ripley',but their's nothing 'new' going on here that has not already come to attention of a'museum'of records, recorded record spiritual 'wrecks'(in which the 'blood' was never applied, nor could it be). GOD'S PROMISED LAST DAY DELUSIONS WHICH HE SENT HERE TO THIS CURSED PLANET(SOON TO HAVE HEAVENS ON FIRE,& BECOME A 'LAKE OF FIRE' FOR DEVIL & ANGELS).Those following into these delusions begin by buying into a false delusion that JC is Personally coming back here, even'can't wait to get back here'(for to marry,or carry away His Bride) WHICH IS EASILY DETECTED AS THE DOCTRINE OF BALAAM(for the 'Ripley's believe it,or not' books). It's recorded that Balaam taught King Balak a "doctrine". IT BECOMES CLEAR IT CAME FROM BALAAM'S THIRD ENCOUNTER WITH THAT KING(WHO WANTED ISRAEL CURSED). He told the King of a'consumation of marriage'coming to Israel down here below! This doctrine gives all who believe Balaam,to PRESUMPTIOUSLY 'party up' down here!

One thing strangely missing from all three pastors' comments was an even rudimentary grasp of scripture as the authority in situations like this. Apparently, Dollar, Jakes and Morton all believe that--if Long repents--he's still qualified for ministry leadership, when Paul clearly states that an overseer (literally "bishop") must be above reproach (1 Timothy 3:2).

Well these days there is a lot going on in the pulpit that should not and just has not come to light. Pastors tippin around with lonely weak sisters.Ministers and others in leadership using that title to get what they want. Our eyes should be on the LORD because he sees everything and will judge ALL...Sin carries consequences and we should pray for each other...So glad GOD forgives and moves on.
