Remembering David Wilkerson

In the wake of David Wilkerson's April 27 death, bloggers, reporters, friends, family and ministry partners are joining in the outpouring of recollections and reflections on his impact on the church during his 50-plus years of ministry. The following is a collection of media items that paint a picture of Wilkerson's remarkable life:

  • Check out Charisma magazine's tribute to Wilkerson, with a photo gallery, videos and written remembrances.
  • David Wilkerson's younger brother, Don, offers personal memories of sharing life and ministry with his brother.
  • Hear in his own words Wllkerson's moving challenge to a lukewarm American church in "A Call to Anguish."
  • In the days following his death, many have been encouraged by Wilkerson's final blog post.
  • Read a moving interview with Nicky Cruz, the former gang member who was born again early in Wilkerson's ministry in New York.
  • Pat Boone recalls what it was like playing David Wilkerson in The Cross and the Switchblade.
  • CBN News features a selection of video clips of Wilkerson and Cruz, as well as a prophetic message Wilkerson gave in 1993.
  • This USA Today piece highlights the dramatic influence of Wilkerson on the church and culture, despite his absence on "top influencers" lists.
  • Sermon Index features more than 500 sermons from Wilkerson.
  • This revealing 1989 article in People magazine discusses Wilkerson's commitment to simplicity and frugality in his personal and ministry life.
  • Dan Wooding has written an interesting piece with some personal reflections and little-known facts about Wilkerson's life.

He was the subject of a Hollywood film on his life, he planted a megachurch in the heart of New York City and he founded a drug addiction recovery ministry that was applauded by President George W. Bush as one of the most effective faith-based initiatives in America. But Wilkerson will be most remembered for his love for the lost and his straight talk to compromising churches.

I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT TO SAY, EXCEPT THAT WHEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT HIS PASSING, THIS MONDAY, CHILLS RAN THROUGH MY BODY, AND TEARS ROLLED DOWN MY EYES, AND I FELT SUCH SADNESS AND LONELINESS. LONELINESS BECAUSE HE WAS ONE OF VERY FEW PREACHERS WHO SPOKE AND PREACHED THE TRUTH OF THE WORD OF GOD. HE COVERED ALL AREAS, HE DID NOT SUGAR COAT ANY ISSUE, HE SPOKE STRAIGHT FROM THE WORD OF GOD. HE WAS SUCH A BLESSING. I LOVED ALL HIS NEWSLETTERS, IT SEEMED THAT WHEN I RECEIVED ONE OF THEM, IT WAS PERFECT TIMING TO SOMETHING I WAS GOING THROU AT THE TIME. I WILL MISS HIM SO MUCH. HE WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR MANY MANY YEARS. THE GREATEST LOSS IF FOR THE FAMILY AND ALL THOSE THAT WERE PERSONALLY CLOSE TO HIM. MAY GOD BLESS THEM ALL IN CHRIST JESUS. I KNOW THAT HE IS NOW ENJOYING A PERFECT LIFE WITH GOD IN HEAVEN, AND IN A SENSE I ENVY HIM.

David Wilkerson will be remembered for many years to come
but I know he has a special place in the Heart of Christ Jesus where he will be remembered throughout eternity. Oh, that we would all live our lives in the light of the eternity of souls.

The Prophetic Church is near dead, drowning!
Isn’t it sad?
Because it calls each great, God-sent rescue,
Horrid bad!

Several thousand boats called Higher Teachings,
Pass by with oar, line and warm blanket,
Shivering prophet leader man says, No!
This stinks more than Lazarus stanketh!

A navy armada called Western Enlightenment,
Passes by with submarine, ship and aircraft carrier,
Drowning prophetic leader says, I see: this isn’t help!
Saying no to the Devil, makes me always merrier!

Finally, a gigantic Enterprise-class space ship,
Called Christ-in-You hovers perfectly overhead,
‘Tis a pity, we could have beamed prophet man aboard,
But he flipped us off! was all its Captain said.

Slowly, excruciatingly,
The prophetic man drowned,
He died with a lie on his lips,
He said, My soul is sound!

The Prophetic Church knows all and sees all,
And that, friends, is the problem!
It knows nothing but pride and hates rebuke,
Inside it lives a goblin!

Learning of David Wilkerson's untimely death brought many conflicting thoughts & feelings. Sadness, because those of us who are still alive are being deprived of his passionate & devoted life to Christ, joy, knowing that he has been ushered into the presence of our Lord. In the early 70's I became a disciple of Jesus Christ. The "Cross & the Switchblade" was one of the first books I read after my conversion to Christ. I remember saying to myself, "If God can use a young preacher from Pennsylvania to do His work, then He can use me." I was also reading "C & S" that introduced me to the empowering work of the Holy Spirit. Wilkerson's continued emphasis upon evangelism & holiness of living challenged me hundreds and thousands of times. Even though I am a priest in the Orthodox Church, I am thankful to the Lord for the many times He used David to speak into my life & to bring me to my knees in repentance. May his memory be eternal!

LIKE an 'ex-smoker' who canNOT stand being around otherS still bound, David Wilkerson(after abandoning 'movie star statis',all the 'perks', immediate desires, realizations for luxury living earthly in then retirement)RETURNED to the streets where first producing his 'stardom',but HAD LITTLE PATIENCEbeing around those showingYOUTHFUL earthy 'stardust' in their eyes as he had once relished! He will be remembered by many for preaching his love for the lost AND his strait talk to ALL those whom he disagreed with (especially those coming to the streets of NYC seeking local blessings in evangelizing the lost without having at least listened to STRAIT TALK) AND FOR TAKING THE OFFICIAL POSITION OF ASSEMBLY(OF GOD) and OF OTHER CHURCHES OF GOD as to THE MODERN 'WORD OF FAITH' MESSAGE WHICH SPLIT from THESE AZUSA STREET SPLINTER GROUPS ONCE AGAIN. He also will be rememered for encouraging TEEN addicts into local government backed tithing programs.
