Laurie: We're Bad at Evangelism

QUOTE: "If there's one thing that Christians and non-Christians have in common, it's this: We're both uptight about evangelism. … Far too often we don't know how to cross over [to our culture]. Far too many Christians today are unnecessarily offensive, hopelessly lame and generally inept at communicating.” —Greg Laurie, before his annual Harvest Crusade in Southern California, where the prominent pastor and evangelist compared not sharing the gospel to having the cure for cancer and keeping it to yourself [christianitytoday.com, 5/6/10]

Greg Laurie knows what he is talking about. The Church has opted for everything but the Christ Gospel. 99.9999% are outside the Church walls and as anyone should know, they are in the billions! But for some reason that E-word offends the Holy Church! And they talk about the Father's Heart! O Christ, open their eyes! For soon we shall stand before The Judgment Seat - and what will all the Church and Conference circuits amount to?

So many fear this word Evangelism. But all it is is the sharing of What Christ has done for you. I think we have seen and heard about these great campaigns where thousands are won for the Lord and we think we have to have that same outgoing mentality...and out of the millions that say they come to Christ about 1/3rd of them truly follow thru. I'm not knocking big campaigns but what I'm saying is that it's all about relationships, talking one on one, listening and then as the Spirit directs you sharing. I once was invited to visit a neighbor. Over tea I felt impelled to share about my adulterous past. she began to cry & shared she was in the middle of an affair at that moment. I shared what Christ did for me & how I was set free etc. Well that night she gave her life to Christ. Waiting for open doors patiently that's all. Fear not for the Lord your God is with you always!

If you're looking for a great book on evangelism, one that makes it accessible for the average person in the pew, like me, I recommend Got Style? Personality-Based Evangelism by Jeff Johnson.

We have been pretty successful. If one on one, Start by finding a common interest. Sports works a lot down here in Florida and go into if you were to die tonight? Many people often share about a mother or grandmother who used to share with them and etc. Boom! Open door. If in a group, We also hold large FREE events. Always FREE. That usually grabs the attention of people. Free Barbque, free breakfast at a nearby resturant, free nintendo outreach and always food. They must hear the gospel before they leave.
