Poll Shows Generational Differences Among Charismatics, Pentecostals

One quarter of all Christian adults identify themselves as charismatic or Pentecostal, yet many differences exist between the various age groups, according to a recent Barna Group poll.

The number of charismatic/Pentecostals in America is one of the highest in any Christian category and crosses denominational and geographic lines. Twenty percent of all Protestants and 26 percent of all Catholics state that they have been filled with the Holy Spirit and participate in at least one spiritual gift, such as prophecy, healing or speaking in tongues.

The study found that younger Christians are more likely than older ones to believe that gifts of the Spirit exist, yet they are less likely to practice these gifts. For instance, 43 percent of Christians under the age of 45 believe that tongues are “valid and active today,” yet less than 9 percent have ever spoken in tongues. In contrast, 37 percent of Christians age 45 and older believe that tongues are active, and as many as 13 percent have spoken in tongues.

Despite their more skeptical view of the charismatic/Pentecostal group, older Christians place a higher value on being led by the Holy Spirit. Among believers age 64 and older, 64 percent say they “consistently allow their lives to be guided by the Holy Spirit.” Only 38 percent of Christians under the age of 26 share this viewpoint.

Younger Christians—particularly those under age 26—also share a more symbolic view of the Holy Spirit. Some 68 percent said they believe the third person of the Trinity is just “a symbol of God’s power or presence but is not a living entity,” compared with 55 percent to 59 percent of all other age groups.

For younger Christians, the charismatic, Pentecostal and Spirit-filled labels are not as divisive as they were to their parents’ generation, said David Kinnaman, president of the Barna Group. However, he cautioned that they seem much less certain about what they do believe and how to put their faith into action.

“It raises the question of what will define the next generation of young charismatics and Pentecostal believers in the U.S.,” Kinnaman said. “Facing less criticism from within the ranks of Christians, they must focus on being grounded theologically and finding a way to live faithfully within the broader culture of arts, media, technology, science and business.” [barna.org, 3/29/10]

The reason that many do not speak in tongues, yet say they believe in the gifts is simply because they don't have teaching or even just read what the Bible says!

It is taught in our church and people practice it. We can only believe what we hear...."faith cometh by hearing".

I think too many churches are afraid to preach/teach it....so people don't know what to believe about it. There are people who want to know....and to those pastors who will boldly preach the Word....they have strong on fire believers (including young people) in their churches!

I was glad to see this article. In an effort to minister to the younger generation, this information was helpful as to having insight into where they are at spiritually. The person and power of the Holy Spirit is tangible and real, and now on the basis of this information, we can more adequately speak to His person and place in their lives. Young people want to know what's real, and He is!! We surely do not want to miss out on all of the benefits that Christ died to give us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who 'leads us and guides us into all truth'. Jesus said he would not leave us comfortless, but would send the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. Thanks be unto God for His provision!

should have said all are not Spiritual, not that all do not have the Spirit in some measure for we are regenerated by the Holy Spirit but gifting is different and do believe in the filling of the Spirit a second blessings if you will and You have to ask our Father and the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit according to His will is the One who will accomplish this task, our Lord is the Baptizer as the prophet John said. It is true that a lot of Pastors have frowned upon or disparaged the Gifting and those who have been blessed with the gift of tounges.

"Ye who are Spiritual should restore them" as the Word says. It has been a great wound to the Body of Christ that all who have been blessed Spiritually should gather by themselves in a separate body. Part of the past was if someone spoke in Tounges the church fathers booted them out or they left to join a charismatic church, which I believe is in error of what scripture teaches. as the scripture says all are "Spiritual" and those who are should use their gifts for the edification and the building up of the Body and restoration. A body is incomplete when it loses one of its members. love James Reid Ross
