Following the American Dream Rather Than God's

QUOTE: "In [their home country], nobody ever told them they could do anything. [But in the United States] they are taught they can do absolutely anything, and it's God's will. They become part of the elect, the chosen. They get swept up in the manifest destiny, this idea that God has lifted Americans above everyone else. They start wanting what's considered the best and the most technologically advanced in this country. [They learn] not just how to survive but how to thrive; not just live paycheck to paycheck but handle money—manage complicated payrolls, invest in equipment. ... While they're trying to be closer to God, instead they become American." Tony Tian-Ren Lin, an Argentine researcher at the University of Virginia who has studied the rise of the Latino prosperity gospel in recent years and particularly its affects on Hispanic immigrants [theatlantic.com, 12/8/09]

Ya, how terrible it is for those greedy Americans to get consumed with making money. They always do selfish things with it like funding almost every major missionary endeavor in the world, and bringing freedom to the oppressed and destroying tyrannical regimes... If only they could learn the holy virtues of laying around all day and making self-righteous comments.

Excuse me for leaving my little comment but reading this i felt i had to say something. I believe that God's dream for his children far surpasses anything regarding riches and wealth which we all know is the American dream. God's dream for his kids is christlikeness. it is is a Kingdom dream not a country dream.

Neal, I can not fit all that I would want to on here to qualify my statement. Nor do I seek to go back and forth with you on this. Been there done that. However,I will add that your perspective will either raise you up or pull you down. Many such as yourself will only see the "half empty side" of America, but for years and even now with the changes the "now Gov" is trying to bring to America, we don't hear of anyone trying to get out. On the other hand we have a problem because it is necessary to control the boarders. People are still dying to get into the "land of opportunity" and that certainly is still the USA. G-d may not like all that the USA has done anymore than all that Israel has done, but it is this nation that he raised up that has sent more Christian missionaries than any other nation on earth. To you the American dream is a myth and sells more "love of money" than any other ideology on earth, but to my parents and millions of others, it has been a blessing.

Come on Homer. Part of what you say is true, but not all of it, and not all the time... God is not in love with America any more than he is in love with Africa. We are lucky, and we are blessed - but the American dream is a myth and sells more "love of money" than any other ideology on earth. And since the love of money is the ROOT of all evils... Well, I'm just saying...

The "American dream" has become tainted and distorted and way below "G-d's Dream" for man and/or believers. When our founding fathers were lead to this land it was with the dream of having a place where they and all that would follow could worship freely and in spirit as they saw fit. America has always been the closest thing on this earth to G-d's dream for his people. America was to be a place of opportunity where the sky's the limit, where a believer could become the head and not have to be the tail all their lives, where one could be above and not beneath, rich and not poor. Enjoy abundance and not lack. People today follow what is a glimpse of that dream and even with the tampering of all the G-d haters and Liberals that do all they can to hamper and change the vision, as expressed in the US Constitution, there is still hope and belief that this is the closest thing to G-d's dream this side of heaven. The American dream is G-d's dream. Follow it.
