Dollar-for-Dollar Giving

An Atlanta-area pastor known for his teaching on financial prosperity has been giving money away to deserving nonprofit organizations in hopes of sparking a "change" that starts with individuals and eventually touches the globe.

Since February, Creflo Dollar has taken his Change Experience tour to five cities, giving away $10,000 in each location to a ministry making a difference in its community. During a tour event Friday in Denver, the pastor of 30,000-member World Changers Church International gave an unexpected $10,000 donation to The Gathering Place, the city's only daytime drop-in center for poor and homeless women and children.

"God has called us to be agents of change," Dollar said in a statement. "That is why we are so intentional about making sure we do what we can to help our brothers and sisters. It is so important to use the resources that God has blessed us with to be a blessing to others."

A spokesman for The Gathering Place said the gift was completely unexpected. "We got a call on Wednesday [July 15]. ... We had no idea what the call was for," said Denny Thompson, public relations director for the Denver ministry. "They said they had a substantial gift for us and could we arrange for someone to accept this gift. I personally didn't know about Creflo Dollar Ministries, so I had to do a little research to find out what the ministry was about."

He said the donation "couldn't have come at a better time," noting that demand on the ministry's resources has increased while contributions have decreased. "We're really struggling with our food bank this year," Thompson said. "This was a God-send. It was unexpected, but it couldn't have come at a better time."

The Change Experience tour is designed to help participants discover keys to acquiring the "character, hope and answers" necessary to change their thinking and their lives, according to the Creflo Dollar Ministries Web site. In addition to Denver, the tour has traveled to Columbia, S.C.; Richmond, Va.; Louisville, Ky.; Houston and Milwaukee. Between now and November, the Change Experience will stop in Omaha, Neb.; Seekonk, Mass.; Los Angeles and Charlotte, N.C.

"In a time where so many people find the world caving in around them and have lost hope, that is when the body of Christ should be there with open arms," said Dollar, who with his wife, Taffi, ministers to millions each week through their TV ministry and satellite church campuses. "We must be the change."

Dollar is one of six charismatic televangelists whose ministries are under investigation by Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. In November 2007, Grassley requested information regarding the nonprofit ministries' expenses, and executive compensation and amenities to ensure their financial integrity.

Grassley's office said Joyce Meyer Ministries, Benny Hinn of World Healing Center Church, Randy and Paula White of Without Walls International Church, Eddie Long of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and Kenneth and Gloria Copeland have responded either fully or partially to Grassley's inquiry. Creflo and Taffi Dollar have not provided any of the requested information, saying the IRS should investigate religious groups, not the Finance Committee. [charismamag.com, 7/22/09]

The article says that Creflo Dollar gave $10,000 to the Gathering Place which is the only daytime drop-in center for the poor, homeless, women and children in Denver. Sorry to disagree but The Salvation Army runs these type of centers not only in Denver but in every large city in America and around the world and has been doing so for over 150 years. The Salvation Army has been receaching out to the lowest rungs of our society in the name of Christ when no other church is around. Perhaps Creflo Dollar could make donations to them as well.

All I can say for a multi-million dollar income ministry giving away $10,000 is just a publicity stunt!

You see, both the original Greek and Hebrew languages are extremely detailed, and many times a word in either of these ancient languages encompasses many different words or meanings.

Are you starting to get a picture of the entirety of the meaning of the word or term "Shalom"? It means wholeness, wellness, a state of safety, and health - in other words, prosperity.

That is prosperity in all respects - inclusive of finances but not exclusive to finances. This word shalom one could say, would translate loosely to mean "whatever one might need to make one's life complete, lacking in no good (or godly) thing."

This is the case with the word "Shalom". Listen to a more complete listing of the meaning of this term: It is defined by the above source as "safe, well, happy, health, prosperity, peace, welfare, well, wholly, or wholeness.

Christians don't understand is just what biblical prosperity really is. They don't know the definition of prosperity the way the Bible teaches it. They not only are not aware it is part of their divine inheritance, but what God's definition of prosperity is.

(10) The Lord sat as King at the flood; Yes, the Lord sits as King forever. (11) The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace. Ps.29:11,12

You see that word "peace" in the above Scripture? That word that is translated from the original Hebrew word "Shalom." It's complete translation can be found in The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible (ref. no. 7965). It is true, the word peace is one of the words or terms that defines this word "Shalom". However, it is not even close to the entire or complete translation.

The "TRUE" concept of prosperity has been lost in the quagmire of modern-day evangelical Christianity.

God wishes above all else that we prosper, be in health, even as our souls prosper.

Why do these false profits not teach the correct "CONTEXT" in which the word should be understood?

The best part of God's definition of prosperity is that it doesn't just mean finances.

If it's about the "MONEY" - how do we justify biblical passages that discourage seeking after wealth with the message of biblical prosperity?

(4) Do not weary yourself to gain wealth,

Cease from your consideration of it,

(5) When you set your eyes on it, it is gone.

For wealth certainly makes itself wings,

Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.Proverbs 23:4,5

I have a question for those who say prosperity is not biblical. DO YOU EVER READ YOUR WHOLE BIBLE--with any degree of understanding? Psalm 35:27 says, " Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea , let them say continually, let the Lord be magnified, which hath pleasure in the PROSPERITY of His servant". What part of the Lord hath pleasure in the prosperity of His servant don't you understand?

God judges the motives of every man's heart...

Dollar and all these guys need to take a lesson from the rich young ruler....

The gospel of prosperity is NOT Biblical no matter how you spin it...

If that was the case, we could store up our riches in Heaven...

The sad irony is we take nothing with us...

Sell and give to the poor and then truly follow Christ...

They are right......if there is something wrong with how they handle their finances...the IRS should audit them like they do everyone else.
God Bless Creflo's ministry in what they are doing. Who else is doing that?
